3. Linux

Linux itself is the first thing you have to get working :)  I currently use gentoo, with their patch 2.6.11-gentoo-r9 sources.  From time to time I also use the vanilla sources from www.kernel.org.  With few exceptions, 2.6.x has made noticeable improvements for driver support and stability with every minor version.  I recommend therefore that you use the latest 2.6 kernel available to you.  You should consult the help provided by your distribution of Linux for installation issues.

note there have been minor touchpad issues with Dell laptops and ~ 2.6.9 - 2.6.10 kernels.
